This project seeks to determine the extent to which foreign governments and non-governmental organizations had a hand in the February 29, 2004 ousting of Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
The project currently consists of one main timeline, comprised of roughly 120 entries. The events summarized in the timeline address a wide range of issues, from Haiti’s IMF-mandated Structural Adjustment Program to evidence of covert foreign support for the paramilitary forces which wreaked havoc in the weeks prior to Aristide’s alleged “resignation.” But at this time, it is far from being a complete account. For example, the timeline needs:
- A more detailed account of the rebel forces’ advance towards Port-au-Prince between January 2004 and the day Aristide was escorted out of Haiti in a US-chartered jet.
- A more detailed account of the period between February 28 and March 1.
- An more detailed look at the post-1994 history between Aristide’s government, donor countries (namely the US), and multi-lateral development/aid organizations.
- An in-depth investigation of the International Republican Institute.
- A detailed history of CARICOM, its achievements, and how its activities were perceived by the US Government.
- A detailed history of the opposition figures.
Anyone interested in submitting or editing an entry for this timeline should use the temporary submit form.
