This grassroots investigative project seeks to provide a detailed record of all events that contribute to an understanding of why the US has the worst health care system in the industrialized world. A major focus of this citizen-led inquiry will be the Medical Industrial Complex which has had a dominant role in shaping the health care system.
Health care expenditure in the US is a whopping 16 percent of the GDP—about twice as much as that of Europe, Canada, and Japan. Despite the huge sums of money that Americans spend on health care, the US is ranked dead last among industrialized nations in Life Expectancy at birth. As the world’s wealthiest country, the US has failed to provide its citizens the right to health care as mandated by UN charter. Other troubling facts about America’s health care system include the following:
- The health care system kills more than 200,000 Americans each year.
- More than 45 million Americans do not have access to decent health care.
- America is the only country in the industrialized world that does not provide some form of national health care. Every attempt to provide universal health care since the days of Harry Truman has been blocked by private sector interests even though polls show that the majority of Americans want national health care.
- In 2005, the number one reason for bankruptcy was unpaid medical bills (mostly by people who have health insurance).
- Corporate health care fraud has dramatically increased in recent years.
